Dear Middle School Families,  

We are on the eve of final exams, our students have been working tremendously hard and bringing forth great creativity and sophistication to their work. Make sure your child is getting rest, eating a balanced meal and getting rest. As the weather gets colder, please make sure your child comes dressed in a jacket or coat to school. We want to make sure our students are appropriately dressed for recess. Fleeces as well as sweatshirts are just not enough to combat against Chicago weather. If you ordered greenery, pick up is this Sunday from 8:30 - 3:30, following Sunday Mass. Lastly, on behalf of all of us here we wish you and your family a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving day holiday. Please take the time to review the dates and items below. Many blessings!

Friendly Reminder about Out of Uniform Days

For dress down days, jeans (no rips or tears), sweatpants (solid color), athletic pants (solid color) may be worn. No leggings unless long top or shirt is covering buttocks.  Any solid color shorts are above but must be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee.  Such examples are Land's End navy, khaki or our school gym shorts. No short shorts are allowed.

Regarding Colder Weather Clothing for Recess

Please make sure that your child comes to school with a jacket or coat. As the weather gets colder sweatshirts and fleeces are not sufficient to brave against the changing Chicago weather.


Reminder about Hooded Sweatshirts & Non- SBPS Gear

As the weather is getting cooler, we wanted to send this reminder that only St. Benedict approved uniform options will be allowed to be worn during the school day (ie fleeces and quarter zips). No hooded sweatshirts or non-SBPS gear will be allowed to be worn inside worn during the school day.

PLEASE be sure to label the inside of all your child(ren)'s fleeces/ quarter zips with their name so we can prevent lost items!

Regarding Requesting Teacher Recommendations

As we embark on high school and scholarship application season, your child may need a recommendation letter(s) from a teacher, staff member or administrator. Please make sure that you allow for at least a two week (preferably 3 week) window with any requests. I have attached a document that you can either copy and fill out electronically or print out and fill out, when making requests. Catholic High School Entrance Exam is Saturday, December 1st


The Catholic High School Entrance Exam will be administered on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018 at 8 a.m. Students may register for the test at the school of their choice beginning on Nov. 17, 2018. Consult the Catholic high school where the student wishes to enroll for the 2019/2020 school year for information on the pre-registration process. The entrance exam fee is $25 payable either by cash or check to the school administering the exam.

The 2019-2020 GoCPS application period for the Chicago Public Schools opens on October 1, 2018, and closes on December 14, 2018. The following information that may be helpful to our eighth grade families in the process of applying to high school.

High School Guide
The 2019-2020 High School Guide will be posted at GoCPS in early October. The guide will contain a listing of all of the schools/programs to which students can apply, along with information regarding admissions screenings and other procedures.

St. Patrick High School Hosts Info Sessions and Other Events (click here for flyer)

Info Night

  • Our Principal, Jon Baffico, will give a presentation about our different academic offerings, academic scholarships/tuition assistance, and other important aspects of life for a student at St. Pat's. The difference between an Info Night and Open House is that the group is much smaller and we engage in more of a conversation with the families, talking to them about things they are most concerned with. 

Phoenix Info Night 

  • If a student has specific learning needs, is consistently challenged with a certain subject(s), or possibly has an IEP/504 Plan, we will talk about how we can help him be successful at St. Pat's. Our Phoenix Program was created to provide an opportunity, offering students a curriculum designed to support their academic strengths and help them grow in the areas in need of improvement. The presentation will be led by our Director of Diverse Learning, Lisa Bodnar, as well as our Director of Curriculum, Christopher Perez.

STEAM/ INCubator Info Night

  • Our STEAM team will present to parents on what we do within the program and where our second-year program is headed. By 2022, our goal is to be the first Chicagoland Catholic school with 20% of its graduating class selecting a post-secondary major, training, or a career related to the STEAM initiative. From there, parents will hear about the exciting INCubator program, a unique entrepreneurship experience where students have the opportunity to work in teams to create and fully develop their own product or service. 

Meet the Shamrocks

  • This fun event introduces our wrestling and basketball teams with fun games and activities. Our athletic program along, with our student body, will be participating in fun events like a bags tournament, shooting contests, scrimmages, and most exciting, the Senior vs. Faculty basketball game. It's a special night for the school as it highlights the pride and brotherhood that Saint Patrick has to offer. 


Reminder about dropping items off

In an effort to best support your child’s growth and accountability, we will not be passing items that your child forgot during the school day.


Uniform Note

  • Plaid belts are allowed

  • Black gym shows are allowed

Please make sure that gym shoes are predominately grey, white or black.  Black gym shoes are not black dress shoes.  Black converse shoes are neither dress or gym shoe.


Middle School Aftercare

Open to all students in grades 6-8! 

In order to best support the many diverse needs of the middle school students while managing a greater level of independence and responsibility, we have organized the afternoon in a way that allows a balance between school work, peer interactions, and free time. 

All students in grades 6-8 who stay at school past 3:30PM will be required to attend the middle school extended care in rooms 335/ 337 (FLEX space). Students in the 6-8 extended care will have the opportunity to work on their homework, receive studying help from teachers, play games with peers, as well as enjoy open free time.  

  • Middle School Extended Care will be located in Rooms 335/ 337 (FLEX space).

  • A teacher will be present to help with homework and supervise.

  • On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, two teachers will be present in aftercare to help provide additional academic support.

  • There is an option to just attend academic support on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:30 - 4:30pm and the cost will be $10.

  • If your child stays after for after care they will be charged the additional $5 which will equate to the total cost of aftercare i.e $15.

  • Cost is $15 per day/ $25 for 2 children.

  • 3:15-6:00PM Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

  • 2:15-6:00PM Tuesday

  • Enter through 3911 N. Bell for pick up and check in with desk and sign out. Your child will be called to come down.

  • Snacks will NOT be provided. Your child may bring a snack or purchase a snack from the vending machines.

  • It is your child’s responsibility to check in within 10 minutes after dismissal.

  • Students must remain in the extended care room until they are picked up or a parent communicates with the teacher on duty that their child may head to practice or walk home.

  • Parents MUST grant permission each day for their child to walk home alone or to a sport game/practice and specify the time they should leave.

  • Students not picked up by 6:05PM will incur a $1/minute fine.

  • Students not picked up by 6:30PM will not be allowed to attend for a period of 2 weeks.

  • Students waiting for a band lesson after school may wait in aftercare until 3:50PM without being charged.

  • The tuition office (Mr. Ben Mazzone) will charge your account for aftercare dates attended.

If an unforeseen circumstance comes about and you need to direct your child to head to aftercare, please contact the school office, 773-539-0066, and alert us of the situation.

Middle School Breakfast

Middle School Students who like to have breakfast at St. Ben's are allowed to be sent up to the cafeteria at 7:30 am.


Teacher Time Fridays Mornings

This means that teachers will not be seeing any students before school for tutoring, reassessments or tutoring Friday Mornings this year.  This does not alter the normal arrival times.  This is only for students that plan to come in "early" to see the teacher.   This time is dedicated to teacher collaboration and innovation.  Thanks for your support!
